This is my first bottle of gin. I’ve enjoyed gin cocktails while out with friends, but this is the first time I have a bottle of it in my home bar. And I couldn’t be happier with the first cocktail made with it, a Gin-Basil Smash. It’s incredibly refreshing, making it just the right kind of drink for the summer.
Muddling and shaking the basil, gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup together makes for a pretty drink in a cloudy, light mint color. A few flecks of torn basil sneak through, which I don’t mind at all.
I didn’t hold back on muddling that basil, afraid I’d leave my plant skimpy for a flavor that would hardly come through in this drink. It was worth it. Hendrick’s gin goes really well with an herbal flavor, and basil was a fantastic herb to pair it with.
Make plenty of simple syrup. You can’t have one of these cocktails without wanting another.
Thank you to Noelle, the breakfast champion, for sending this recipe. She wisely said to have this drink on a balcony.
So I did.
Just a simple cocktail to show off the particular herbal notes of Hendrick’s gin.
3 tablespoons simple syrup
4 ounces Hendrick’s gin
the juice of 1 lemon
a big bunch of fresh basil
Add simple syrup, gin, lemon juice, and basil to a cocktail shaker. Muddle the hell out of it.
Fill the cocktail shaker with ice, and shake for 10 seconds. Strain into two glasses filled with ice. Garnish each with one basil leaf.
